Revision knee replacement

Home Knee Procedures Revision knee replacement

Whilst their lifespan is continually improving, knee replacements sometimes do wear out or come loose. If your knee replacement is painful, uncomfortable or gives way, it should be assessed to see whether revision knee replacement would help. Causes for knee replacements failing include infection, loosening, wear of the components, wear of the kneecap, or problems with the original surgery.

The techniques for revision knee replacement are also improving, so a painful knee replacement can often be fixed. If a knee replacement has already been revised but is still painful or comes loose again then it should be assessed by your surgeon and may be able to be revised again.

Not all painful knee replacements need to be revised, and there may be something simple which can help your knee replacement. Revision knee replacement is usually a bigger operation than the original replacement and you need to carefully discuss it with your surgeon.

At Melbourne Hip and Knee, our surgeons have trained in some of the best centers in the world for knee replacement, and are experienced in assessing painful knee replacements, advising how to improve them and revising them if necessary.
