The rehabilitation after an ACL reconstruction is vitally important. It is important to follow the instructions of your surgeon and physiotherapist and not try and do things too quickly - even if your knee feels good. Your graft is actually at its weakest around 3 months after your surgery and it is possible to reinjure it at this time.
What is the normal recovery after an ACL reconstruction
- You will normally be discharged on the morning after your surgery
- Physiotherapy is restricted to Closed chain exercises for 1st 4 months
- Return to full sporting activity normally after 9-12 months.
If there is an associated meniscal repair than a hinged knee brace is worn for 6/52 with a range of 0 - 90 degrees followed by a further 6 weeks of no deep squats or lunges.
Post Operative ACL Rehabilitation protocol.
