What causes knee pain?
Knee pain is a common complaint and can have many causes. The most likely causes depend on your age, medical condition and any history of injuries or trauma to the knee. Sometimes pain felt at the knee is caused by structures outside the knee. These can include pain from the artery behind the knee, pain radiating from the back or pain coming from the hip. Most of the time, however knee pain is related to the structures of the knee. These structures include the bone, cartilage, ligaments and lining of the knee. These structures can be torn, inflamed, infected or degenerative.
In Young adults knee pain is often associated with injuries to the meniscus (pad of shock absorbing cartilage), lining cartilage or ligaments. Sometimes there can be inflammation from overuse. It may be important to exclude infection or tumor as a cause of pain
