What causes hip pain?

There are many structures around the hip that can cause pain in this area. Apart from the hip itself, pain can come from the nerves and arteries near by, a hernia in the groin, pain from the back or pelvis. Occasionally pain can even come from structures within the pelvis.

Around the hip joint there is the bone of the joint, the lining cartilage and labrum, the joint lining and capsule as well as muscles and other tissue which surround the hip. In young people pain is often associated with injury or inflammation from overuse. Sometime there may be an abnormally shaped hip or hip socket (acetabulum) which can lead to hip pain. In Elderly people hip pain is more commonly caused by arthritis. Occasionally the bone in the hip can die in a condition called Avascular necrosis.
